Is your refrigerator full of kids drawings and paintings?

Â

Running out of wall space for your little Picasso? Is your refrigerator at its maximum magnet capacity? If you've used all available refridgerator and bulletin board space, don't worry! There are lots of ways to display your children's artwork.

First, you'll want to preserve your young artist's work digitally. That way you can toss the originals if you need to and still have a copy on a disk or your computer to enjoy for years to come. The original drawing or painting needs to be scanned.. No scanner? No problem. Any copy or photo business will scan your items and put them on a disk for you. Gather up several pieces to take with you and have them scanned and copied to a disk all at once.

The resolution of the images is important and what you choose depends on what you want to use them for and the final size they need to be. The DPI, or dots per inch, refers to the physical size of an image when it is reproduced on paper or displayed on a monitor. Any image that is to be used on a printed piece such as a bag, mousepad or mug needs to be scanned at a high resolution of 150 dpi or higher. If the images will stay on a computer screen or end up on a website, 72 dpi will be plenty.

If you're not sure how you will use the images, always scan them at the highest quality available.

Taking a photo of the artwork doesn't work nearly as well as scanning the art on a flatbed scanner. The scanner presses the artwork flat and the light source is even across the entire surface of the piece so it will look as much like the original as possible.

Once you have your artwork on a disk, the possibilities are endless.
